Inspired by Italian artists Vittore Carpaccio and Gentile Bellini’s renaissance paintings which include depictions of sub-Saharan boatmen and gondoliers, Sheila wanted to create a wallpaper and textile that acknowledged and centered these men who were a documented part of the African diaspora in Europe and played an important role in renaissance Venice. Our GONDOLIERI wallpaper and accompanying textile were created from six original oil paintings that were commissioned for this new, colorful design.
